What is a file extension?
A file extension is the part at the end of a file name after the dot. In invitation.pdf, for example, .pdf is the extension. Extensions help the operating system and applications recognize the file format.
Simply put, an extension can be thought of as a label on a box. The label βbookβ tells us that its contents are likely reading material, while the label βshoesβ indicates a different content. Labels do not always guarantee the contents of the box are correct, but they are very helpful as initial clues.

Common file types
PDF: suitable for reading and sharing
