Smart Online Shopping: How to Compare Prices Without Falling for Promotions

The cheapest price on a marketplace isn't necessarily the most economical choice. With a few simple habits, homemakers can compare prices, shipping costs, store quality, and purchase risks before hitting the buy button.

Belanja Online Lebih Hemat: Cara Membandingkan Harga tanpa Terjebak Promo

Shopping for household needs online is indeed convenient, but the marketplace layout often makes us feel pressured to buy immediately. There are countdowns for promotions, vouchers that are about to expire, similar product recommendations, and discount notifications that keep popping up. The problem is, the displayed price may not reflect the final cost we actually pay.

With a bit of organized thinking, marketplaces can be used as tools for saving money, not just places to find cheap items. The key is to compare total costs and benefits, not just the price figures that appear on the homepage.

Don't Trust the Main Price Immediately

The price shown in the product photo or title usually does not include all costs. The total payment can change due to shipping fees, service charges, handling fees, additional insurance, or specific voucher conditions.

For example, a product appears to cost Rp25,000. After adding it to the cart, the shipping fee turns out to be Rp18,000, and the voucher is only valid for a minimum purchase of Rp100,000. Another product priced at Rp30,000 might actually be more economical because it has free shipping and does not require additional purchases.

Get into the habit of checking the figures on the payment summary page. This is where we can find out the actual costs before completing the transaction.

Use a Simple Formula: Net Price Per Item

To compare two stores, use a simple calculation:

Net Price = Total Payment ÷ Number of Items Received

For example, Store A sells laundry soap for Rp22,000 with a shipping fee of Rp12,000 for one item. The total is Rp34,000. Store B sells two soaps for Rp42,000 with a shipping fee of Rp12,000. Store B's total is Rp54,000, or Rp27,000 per soap.

In this example, Store A is still cheaper per item even though its product price appears higher on some pages. However, if we actually need two soaps, Store B may be more practical because the shipping fee is only paid once.

This calculation doesn't always need to be complicated. A calculator on your phone is sufficient. The important thing is not to compare unit prices without considering quantity, shipping costs, and actual needs.

Differentiate Discounts from Buying Urges

A discount only saves money if the item is genuinely needed. Buying three bottles because of a bundle promotion is not saving if two bottles end up expiring or going unused.

Before opening the marketplace, write a list of needs with three categories:

  • Must Buy: items that are nearly out of stock or needed soon.
  • Can Buy: items that will be useful but can be postponed.
  • Just Appealing: items that look good due to ads, trends, or app recommendations.

Prioritize the first category. If the total shopping aligns with the budget, then consider the second category. The third category should ideally not be purchased spontaneously.

Check Store Reputation, Not Just Stars

Store ratings help, but they are not enough to guarantee a good shopping experience. Check the following:

  • The number of products sold.
  • Recent reviews, not just old ones.
  • Photos from buyers showing the actual condition of the items.
  • Recurring complaints, such as damaged packaging, incorrect sizes, or items differing from the description.
  • The speed at which the store responds to inquiries and handles issues.

Five-star reviews that are very brief may not provide useful information. Conversely, three-star reviews are often more helpful because buyers usually explain both the pros and cons in a balanced manner.

For household products, also pay attention to expiration dates, net sizes, materials, warranties, and completeness of contents. Promotional photos sometimes display multiple items, while the price only applies to one unit.

Beware of Products That Are Too Cheap

Prices significantly below market rates are indeed tempting, but they need to be examined more closely. There are several possibilities: the product size is smaller, the item is not an official version, it's old stock, the packaging is damaged, or the description is intentionally vague.

Compare at least three stores. If most sell the product at a similar price range, and one store is much cheaper, consider it a sign to double-check, not a guaranteed opportunity.

For branded items, pay attention to the seller's name, authenticity labels, warranties, and return policies. Do not send payments outside the platform just because the seller promises additional prices or special discounts.

Use the Cart Feature as a Waiting Place

The shopping cart does not have to immediately result in a transaction. Add desired products, then wait a few hours or a day. This pause helps separate needs from momentary desires.

During the wait, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Do I really need this item now?
  2. Do I already have a similar item at home?
  3. If the promotion disappears, would I still want to buy it?

If the answer is still yes, proceed to check the total costs. If not, remove it from the cart without feeling like you've missed an opportunity. Promotions will continue to appear in different forms, but household budgets do not always increase.

Pay Using the Safest Method

Use official payment methods available within the app. Avoid giving out OTP codes, PINs, passwords, or card data to anyone, including those claiming to be marketplace officials.

If there are order issues, use the help center or official complaint features. Keep proof of payment, important conversations, and photos of the package upon receipt, especially for high-value or fragile items.

Also check the recipient's name and address before paying. Small mistakes like selecting an old home address can make the cost of reshipping higher than the discount received.

What You Can Do Now

  • Create a list of needs before opening the shopping app.
  • Compare at least three stores for the same item.
  • Look at the total payment, not just the product price.
  • Check recent reviews and photos from buyers.
  • Wait a few hours before purchasing non-urgent items.
  • Keep transaction proof until the order is confirmed as correct.

Smart online shopping does not always mean choosing the lowest price. A better choice is items that are genuinely needed, sourced from trustworthy sellers, have reasonable final costs, and do not disrupt the household budget.
